Nvidia RTX Video HDR: AI transforms SDR video to HDR

1 min read

TLDR:

Nvidia has introduced a new feature called RTX Video HDR that uses AI algorithms to convert standard dynamic range (SDR) video to high dynamic range (HDR) on the fly. The feature is available in the latest RTX graphics driver update and is compatible with Chromium-based browsers. However, users will still need an HDR-capable display and an Nvidia RTX graphics card to enable the tool. Results from testing show that the feature makes SDR video in HDR mode look more like SDR video in SDR mode, rather than making SDR video look like HDR video.

Nvidia has released the RTX Video HDR feature as part of its latest driver update. The feature uses AI algorithms to convert SDR video to HDR on the fly. It is compatible with Chromium-based browsers and requires an HDR-capable display and an Nvidia RTX graphics card to work.

Users can enable the feature by updating to the new driver and navigating to the Nvidia Control Panel. From there, users can choose “Video,” then “Adjust video image settings,” and finally check the “High dynamic range” box under “RTX video enhancement.” Windows display settings must also have HDR enabled for the feature to work.

Testing shows that RTX Video HDR mainly makes SDR video in HDR mode look more like SDR video in SDR mode, rather than making SDR video look like HDR video. The effectiveness of the feature may vary depending on the monitor used.

The driver update also adds support for Ultra Low Latency Mode with DirectX 12 games.
